چکیده

The performance of a Video-on-Demand broadcasting scheme is commonly evaluated by the maximum waiting time encountered by the customer before viewing can start. This paper addresses the issue of minimizing the average waiting time. Recently, we proposed Harmonic Block Windows scheduling to specifically minimize the average waiting time for given bandwidth. Here, we present an efficient heuristic algorithm that generates asymptotically optimal Harmonic Block Windows schedules. Using simulation, we demonstrate that, as we increase the ‘‘block size’’, the normalized average waiting time of these schedules approaches the theoretical minimum achievable by any ‘‘fixed start points’’ schedule. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Broadcast Disks with Polynomial Cost Functions

In broadcast disks systems, information is broadcasted in a shared medium. When a client needs an item from the disk, it waits until that item is broadcasted. Broadcast disks systems are particularly attractive in settings where the potential customers have a highlyasymmetric communication capabilities, i.e., receiving is significantly cheaper than transmitting. This is the case with satellite ...

Efficient Data Allocation over Multiple Channels at Broadcast Servers

Broadcast is a scalable way of disseminating data because broadcasting an item satisfies all outstanding client requests for it. However, because the transmission medium is shared, individual requests may have high response times. In this paper, we show how to minimize the average response time given multiple broadcast channels by optimally partitioning data among them. We also offer an approxi...

Optimal Policies for Multi-server Non-preemptive Priority Queues

We consider a multi-server non-preemptive queue with high and low priority customers, and a decision maker who decides when waiting customers may enter service. The goal is to minimize the mean waiting time for high-priority customers while keeping the queue stable. We use a linear programming approach to find and evaluate the performance of an asymptotically optimal policy in the setting of ex...

Asymptotically optimal appointment schedules with customer no-shows

We consider the problem of scheduling appointments for a finite customer population to a service facility with customer no-shows, to minimize the sum of customer waiting time and server overtime costs. Since appointments need to be scheduled ahead of time we refer to this problem as an optimization problem rather than a dynamic control one. We study this optimization problem in fluid and diffus...

A Simulation-Based Approach for Optimal Nurse Scheduling in an Emergency Department

The purpose of this study was to determine an effective nurse schedule for the Emergency Department (ED) of York Hospital (York, PA). The goal was to minimize the patients’ average waiting time, subject to various requirements from the hospital and the nurses. An ARENA simulation model was built to model the ED’s current staffing plan and to evaluate alternative schedules proposed by a custom-b...
